Choosing
How to choose a headstone
Quick answer
To choose a headstone: (1) check your cemetery's rules, (2) pick a type — flat, slant, or upright, (3) choose the granite color and material, (4) plan the inscription, (5) add a symbol or photo, and (6) review a design proof before engraving. Working with a designer makes each step simpler.
Six steps to choosing a headstone
- 1
Check your cemetery's rules
Every cemetery sets its own rules for size, material, and whether upright stones are allowed. Call the office first — we can verify their specs for you.
- 2
Choose a type
Flat/grass-level markers are the most affordable and widely accepted. Slant markers angle the face for easy reading. Upright stones offer the most engraving room. Companion versions are made for two.
- 3
Choose material and color
Most families choose granite — grey, black, red, or pink — for its durability. Bronze on a granite base is required by some cemeteries.
- 4
Plan the inscription
Decide on names, dates, and any epitaph or short message. Keep important details accurate; engraving is permanent.
- 5
Add a symbol or photo
A cross, a rose, a favorite scene, or a porcelain photo can make the memorial personal. Choose something you'll want to see for decades.
- 6
Review a proof
Approve a design proof before any engraving begins. We don't cut a single line until you've checked names, dates, and spelling.
Helpful things to have ready
- The cemetery's name and section (for rule verification).
- Correct spelling of names and exact dates.
- Any photo or artwork you'd like included (higher resolution is better).
- A rough budget — we can work within most ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to decide everything at once?
No. You can start a design online and come back to it, or schedule an appointment and work through it with a designer at your own pace. There's no charge until you approve a proof.
Can I design a headstone online?
Yes. Our online designer lets you choose the shape, granite color, font, symbol, and inscription and see a live preview. You can also work one-on-one with a designer.
What if I'm not sure what my cemetery allows?
Give us the cemetery's name and we'll verify their size, material, and finish requirements before anything is engraved.
